New project: updating my toddler’s room
It’s official: I’ve started a new project! My daughter is now 2 1/2 and there are aspects of this room that haven't been touched since before she was born. Join me while I update her room!
Here’s where we began, with a crib, wall moulding, an awesome light fixture, and so few toys…back when this was still called “the nursery” 😭
We’ve already gotten rid of the nursery furniture and added a big girl bed…more on that soon! Let’s get back to the overall plan here.
As a former user experience designer, I think about a project from the user's perspective. How might it function better for my daughter, and me?! With that in mind, here are the main goals:
An updated and reorganized closet. This includes better toy rotation and organization capabilities. It also means clothing storage that is more accessible for a toddler who wants to dress herself! Plus, I’m brainstorming a mini reading nook in the closet…stay tuned! 👗
DIY custom bedside table. Picture this: a table that is exactly the right size for the space, and is not made of formaldehyde (more on that soon!). It will have a drawer for pajamas and extra sheets. Plus perfectly-sized Tonie Box storage! Because the Tonie needs a place of honor in this room since it lulls her to sleep most nights 🙌
Paint! After my color-drenched library project, I’ve got the bug to paint ALL. THE. THINGS. And first up is my daughter’s room to match her sweet personality 🩷
This week, I tackled the closet. I removed everything from the closet to see a blank canvas. I noticed two things while doing this:
First, this girl loves books! The way she devoured the stack of books from the closet was adorable! They were all like new gifts to her!
Second, this girl is already very invested in this project! Every day she would come home from daycare and ask me, “what’s new in my room, mama?” I think we have a future interior designer on our hands! And I also think the pressure is ON!
After thorough vetting from my daughter, I put together the following inspiration collage for the closet:
And finally, I got a paint sample that I’m assessing in different lights this weekend. We’ll see where we land on the paint front!
I’m doing all this as part of the One Room Challenge. And I’m excited to see what I can accomplish for my daughter in the next eight weeks! Follow me here and on Instagram for the whole process!
