5 Simple Tips to Reset Your Home

Now that we’re well into January and (finally!) feeling healthy, it’s the perfect time to reset the house.

There’s something about the angle of the sun in January — it feels fresh and crisp, reflecting off the snow and chill outside. After the cozy chaos of the holidays, I love embracing a more minimalistic and clean home. Can you relate?

Here are five tips I use to reset my home and set my family up for success in the new year:

1. Give yourself a deadline.
Deadlines help create a sense of urgency and accountability. Set a short-term timer for 20 minutes and see what you can accomplish. Or commit to a bigger deadline, like hosting guests. Either way, a healthy, external motivator can push you to tackle those lingering tasks.

2. Focus on one room at a time.
Set a timer, and touch everything in the room. Move the chair that never gets moved and vacuum underneath. Adjust the table to align perfectly with the room’s flow. Straighten that off-kilter picture frame. These little details make a big difference and leave the space feeling refreshed.

3. Simplify your spaces.
Start by clearing shelves, drawers, and toy bins completely. Only put back what’s truly needed. After the abundance of Christmas, paring down feels refreshing and freeing.

4. Disinfect like a pro.
Winter is the season for colds and flu, so I’ve invested in heavy-duty disinfectant wipes. I love the grapefruit-scented ones—they make cleaning a little more enjoyable! Leaving them on the bathroom counters makes it easy to grab one and quickly wipe down high-traffic areas.

5. Celebrate your reset with something new.
Once you’ve refreshed a room, treat yourself by adding a little “jewelry” to the space—like hanging a new picture. It’s a fun incentive that motivates me to tackle each area and gives the room a final, celebratory touch.
